This week’s Spotlight Here in Time interviews the premier legend of autosport, “The Goose.” An enduring figure with a career that spans over sixty years and at least two hundred teams, Goose is the gentleman’s racer. We caught up with Goose as he was preparing for this Sunday’s Formula Uno Grand Prix.

Oh man, I forgot we were doing this today. How’s my hair look?

It’s fine. One of the things I like to do with legends of the asphalt like yourself is to start with your earliest racing memory.

It’s probably when I was like two. Maybe younger. I had crapped my pants in the back seat of my mom’s 1978 Caprice wagon. You remember those, right? With the fake wood paneling? I was screaming and crying and mom was pushing that six-cylinder to its breaking point, punching the dash and swearing at the cop to get out of her way.

When did you know you were destined to become a racing legend?

My dad stole a golf cart that belonged to Ayrton Senna. Dad had this aluminum cooler in the back seat filled with all his empties and he made me sit on top of it. I guess you could say at that point it was in our blood. Ever since that day I just knew it, you know? Like every time I would smell gasoline I would be like, hey . . . that stuff powers car engines.

What is your favorite racetrack?

G

There’s so many to pick from. I really like the Nordschleife. The fans there are complete nutters. I had a lot of fun at Spa in 1994. Me and Flavio Briatore snuck into the announcer booth and sang Get Low over the track loudspeaker. I grew up near Watkins Glen. Good memories.

I could use more sponsorships. Apparently it’s a breach of contract to . . . you know what. Never mind.
